Brünnhilde

Goddess and woman. Protectress and avenger.

Brünnhilde is one of Wagner’s most complex and significant characters. Initially introduced as Wotan’s favored Valkyrie and daughter, she is tasked with carrying fallen heroes to Valhalla. Over the course of The Ring Cycle, she defies her father’s will, loses her divinity, experiences love and betrayal, and ultimately becomes the agent of cosmic change.

“Heil dir, Sonne! Heil dir, Licht!”
(Hail to thee, Sun! Hail to thee, Light!)
Siegfried, Act III, Scene 3

Unlike many characters in The Ring, Brünnhilde’s morality grows rather than deteriorates. Her journey charts the transition from divine obedience to human compassion, making her the cycle's ultimate redeemer.
