Opera in the Park Has Been Cancelled
Overview
We write to share news that Opera in the Park on Sunday, September 13, has been cancelled.
While San Francisco Opera and the Opera Orchestra remain in negotiations towards a new contract, the Orchestra has not been able to commit to playing the opening weekend of the season. Opera in the Park is a major undertaking for the Opera and its partner organizations, and audience members attend this free event from all over the Bay Area. Without an advance commitment from the Orchestra that they will perform, we are sadly unable to proceed with Opera in the Park, and must cancel the concert this year to remove any uncertainty for those attending and producing the event.
This is a complex time for the arts and the current negotiation between the Opera and its Orchestra is reflective of long-term economic realities being faced by companies all across the country. The Company has great respect for all of its employees, artists, and labor organizations. We remain committed to reaching an agreement that respects the Orchestra’s extraordinary talents and aligns with these economic realities to strengthen the Opera for the future.
