Alberich

Alberich doesn’t pretend to be good. Where the gods hide their ambitions behind rules and morality, he pursues power openly. In Das Rheingold, he steals the ring at the very moment he renounces love, founding his power not on enchantment but on a deliberate act of theft and denial. When the ring is taken from him, Alberich responds by cursing it.

He doesn’t try to win it back. He makes sure no one else gets to keep it. Alberich doesn’t believe in fairness or redemption. Once he has given up love for power, he assumes that’s the rule for everyone.

He alone knows power cannot be taken cleanly.

  Alberich's cruel rule over the Nibelungs has been interpreted as a larger critique of industrial capitalism and the commodification of human beings.

  Alberich is also the only character who truly succeeds in using the ring's power, as he is the only character who explicitly renounces love.

  Alberich is the only main character not accounted for at the end of the tetralogy. It is not confirmed whether he lives or dies.

• San Francisco Opera History

  
  San Francisco Opera’s Alberich in 1936 was Arnold Gabor. Gabor loved singing in San Francisco so much that he put down roots in Oakland and opened a School for Wagnerian Art (later the Studio for Vocal Culture) to share his considerable expertise with new generations of singers.
