Critic and journalist Ken Smith has covered arts and culture on five continents or a wide variety of print, broadcast and internet media. Since 2004 (until the pandemic) he divided his time between Hong Kong, where he is the Asian performing arts critic for the Financial Times, and New York, where he was the US correspondent for Gramophone magazine. A winner of the 2020 SOPA Award for cultural reporting and the ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music writing, he is a regular arts commentator for RTHK Radio 4, a monthly columnist for Opera magazine in Shanghai, and frequent contributor to Opera magazine of London. The author of Fate! Luck! Chance!...The Making of “The Bonesetter’s Daughter” Opera, he has served as a consultant to many cross-cultural projects, including David Henry Hwang’s bilingual Broadway comedy Chinglish and Kung Fu, a musical based on the life of Bruce Lee for New York’s Signature Theatre. He serves on the jury for the annual International Opera Awards in London.
