The Heart of a Woman
"The Heart of a Woman"
Florence Price, Composer
| Artist | Rhoslyn Jones (soprano) |
|---|---|
| Pianist | Matthew Piatt |
Soprano Rhoslyn Jones sings Florence Price’s “The Heart of a Woman,” with powerful words by poet, playwright, and columnist Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880-1966), an artist of African American, Native American, and English descent, and a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance.
“Singing in English is a particular pleasure for me,” says Rhoslyn, “because of the closeness of the language and the way this poetry is set makes it so accessible for my singing.” Pianist Matthew Piatt adds, “Her piano writing is lush and symphonic, and both the singer and pianist have a spectrum of expression ranging from conversational (‘The Heart of a Woman’) to rhapsodic (‘Hold Fast to Dreams’).”
