Of Florence Price (1887-1953), the great American composer, pianist, and teacher, soprano Rhoslyn Jones says, she “holds a special place in history for many reasons, one being that she was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition performed by a major orchestra.”
Rhoslyn performs three of her songs, beginning with “An April Day,” set to words by Joseph F. Cotter, Jr. (1895-1919). The African American poet and playwright from Louisville, Kentucky ends his short and blissful poem: Sufficient is it just to live.....on such a day as this!
