Abendlied

So hushed is the evening / That you can hear /
The footfalls of passing angels.

Mezzo-soprano Laura Krumm finds particular comfort in Robert Schumann’s “Abendlied.” “It could be because the chord progressions remind me of the Lutheran Hymns I learned as a child or the lulling effect of the two-against-three,” she reflects. “All add up to such a feeling of gratitude when at the end of every stanza I’m reminded to let my worry-sick heart rest.”
