GIUSEPPE VERDI
An intriguing blend of French eloquence and Italian passion, the opera climaxes with an extended duet of incandescent vocal opulence.
THE SCENE 1792, the court of the Swedish king, Gustav III
THE STORY Gustav is a generous, enlightened ruler but faces the ominous threat of conspiracy – or so his most trusted friend Anckarström warns him. But when Anckarström discovers his wife, Amelia, and the King alone together, he becomes the King’s bitter enemy and the ringleader of the conspiracy. Consumed by jealousy, Anckarström stalks his prey during the opera’s climactic scene at the King's masked ball.
